National Geographic Saving Forests
Details from the burn scar of the Dome Fire. In August of 2020, a 43,273-acre wildfire burned through the Joshua Tree woodland of Cima Dome. The fire was ignited by a lightning strike in a wilderness area of Mojave National Preserve. Initial requests for additional resources to fight the fire were denied since other fires were burning in more populated areas of California at the time. By the time it was contained, the Dome Fire had burned a total of 43,273 acres and killed an estimated 1.3 million Joshua trees. 25% of the contiguous Joshua tree forest burned in this fire.
